OF WHALES AND JAPAN
by Isaac Ho, the administrator
I just read an international piece of news concerning the vessel named Steve Irwin being manned by a determined crew under the indomitable leadership of Captain Paul Watson.
They are currently seeking and "harassing" the Japanese whaling fleet in the Southern Oceans where the whales are to be killed under the Japanese interpretation of their so-called dubious "scientific research."
This killing of whales, both the mothers and babies, are being undertaken, year after year because of a deliberate loophole in the International Whaling Commission's laws governing the whales.
Although United States, Australia and New Zealand, in principle, are against the Japanese wanton destruction of the whales but actually consuming their meat, yet sadly, these countries have not done anything much to carry out their opposition in a realistic manner so that the Japanese government can understand the message - loud and clear.
And by remaining dubious in conserving the whales, these protector countries are just leaning backwards to allow the Japanese fleet to carry out their dubious practice of "studying" the whales via their psuedo scientific research with the end result that each of the Japanese experiment would result in the death of a whale and the baby!
Such practice of killing whales for "scientific research" has to stop because how long would the Japanese government and their agencies continue to perform such unconvincing research which is at the expense of the fate of the whales concerned, done year by year in which Captain Watson and his merry crews have to act decisively in order to save the whales there.
As an individual and as a nature conservationist, I wholeheartedly supports the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society with its registered offices in Seattle, State of Washington, to stop the Japanese whaling fleet for causing more harm (than good) with those gentle giants of our Southern Ocean.
I wonder how many more years of "scientific research" would the Japanese fishing agency require in order to finish its bloody business of whale-slaughtering.
Frankly, the slaughtered whales are cut up and package neatly by the factory ship and then when full and when hundreds of whales are killed with their bodies cut and canned would the Japanese whaling fleet return to Japan and store the whales' remains in their warehouses until being sold for public consumption.
In fact, whale eating in Japan is slowly but surely declining as the young and not so young prefer beef, pork and poultry.
Isn't it time to change this so-called culinary craving or their cultural habit to conserve those whales in our oceans?
For once these whales are hunted till extinction, they would be gone forever from the seas and oceans of our planet...just think about the dire consequence if the whaling is NOT stop right now!!!
