Malaysia - where is it heading?
--- by Isaac Ho
Malaysia is situated above the Earth's equator and roughly the size of Great Britain.
It has a multi-racial and multi-cultural population of some 30 milliion souls - comprising of Malays (the majority), Chinese, Indians, Dyaks and others (the visible minorities).
This is the country in which I was born prior to the Second World War and before my emigration with my family to Canada.
The country of my birth, Malaysia, is naturally endowed with several natural resources - rich tin ore in the ground, vast estates of rubber and palm oil, forests of hard wood timber and rich tidal coast where fish and crusteceans are in plenty.
In short, it is a land literally flowing with 'milk and hone.'
Malaysia including East Malaysia of Sabah and Sarawak came into being in 1963 by a popular referendum.
Prior to that date, it was known as British Malaya under the British rule until it was granted independence (Merdeka) in 1957.
The Second World War came to the then British Malaya in 1942 when the Dai Nippon Imperial Jap armies invaded the land at the first landing in Kota Bahru.
Then these invaders ruled the land to Singapore and they ruled it with extreme barbarism and cruelty so much so that some 5 thousand Chinese retreated into the jungle and took up arms supplied and trained by the British stayed behind parties to conduct a running war with the Japs - harassing them at every turn as amply described in a classic called THE JUNGLE IS NEUTRAL by Col. Spencer C. Chapman of the Force 136.
Then after the world war, the guerilla fighters who were mainly Chinese clamoured for independence from the British colonial masters, when the latter refused, then they retreated back into the jungle and commenced fighting called by the British as The Emergency from 1948-1960. This internal revolt was described in detail by Noel Barber's book, titled: THE WAR OF THE RUNNING DOGS.
Meanwhile, as national independence was near - the three main component races of Malays, Chinese and Indians form the Alliance Party and then begin self-rule until independence was granted by Britain in 1957.
Malaysia is supposed to be a multi-cultural and multi-racial country with a federal constitution to guarantee the rights of all citizens.
But later on, the majority Malays who are all Muslims classify themselves as "bumiputras" or sons and daughters of the soil.
They insist that they should have not only special rights, but rights to civil service, rights to form the local police force and the rights to have a national army. They also have rights and priorites to places in colleges and universities. They also have rights to the nation's entire economic cake and today, they have become so rich and masters of the land at the expense of other citizens - the Chinese and Indians. Today too, the leading political party Barisan Nasional is dictated and ruled by UMNO or United Malays National Organizations.
During 1969, when the Opposition Parties of Chinese and Indians won slightly more seats in both the parliamentary and state elections, the majority Malays ran amok and started the massive race riots, notoriously known as the May 13th, in which hundreds of Chinese and Indians were murdered and the fanatical Malays worked in cahoots with the biased Malay Regiments.
Today, the country has changed into a Muslim state where the powers rest with one dictator - Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak and his wife along with UMNO. All of them practice cronism, rampant corruption and try to cover each other up in a rush to steal as much money as possible from the land and from the taxpayers' pockets. There is an anti-corruption agency but it is a toothless tiger controlled by Najib and Co.
The Chinese and Indians who are also citizens are left in a lurch and with neither power nor effective political force to deal with the majority Malays.
A general election is looming and it is expected that the effective Opposition (a combination of enlightened Muslims, Hindus and Chinese) will possibly under the Pakatan Rakyat Party would win decisively to become the next government under the charismatic Anwar Ibrahim who had been falsely accused of sodomy.
Meanwhile, because of the restrictions and fewer opportunities left in the country, it is estimated more than a million Chinese and Indians have left the country for better pasture overseas.
However, let all Malaysians including overseas Malaysians support and vote in Pakatan Rakyat for a fairer, clean, effective government soon when the election is called.
Otherwise, Malaysia and Malaysians under BN-UMNO regime could go bankrupt because of uncontrollable corruption and the people would find themselves worse than those in poorest Africa!
