HENRY WALTER BATES, FRS, FLS, FGS, SOUTH AMERICAN EXPLORER ******************************************************************
by Isaac Ho, Administrator & Founder of this Forum
Henry Walter Bates, was essentially a self-taught entomologist and his well-written account of his journey along the Amazon River, Brazil in the nineteen century
was well-received in England (the land of his birth) and the title: THE NATURALIST ON THE RIVER AMAZON is still in print today and runs over 500 pages.
Walter Bates was born in Leicester, England in 1825 and he passed away in London in 1892. A rather short life of some 67 years!
Had he lived longer, he would continue to make tremendous contribution to the science of Entomology and his collection of insects in the British Museum could
still be studied by students of entomology to this day.
Walter Bates was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, Fellow of the Linea Society and Fellow of Geographic Society of Great Britain on account of his
great contribution to science and understanding of the fine insect life along the Amazon River.
I hope that this short description of the late Henry Walter Bates would encourage people to find out more about the life and times of him in the wikipaedia.
A detailed review of his life could be found in: Popular Science Monthly, Volume 42, November 1892. Sketch of Henry Walter Bates by going to Google.
