British Columbia Government apologizes to the Chinese

If you were to visit the websites of both The Vancouver Sun and The Province now, you would as a reader, read the
latest breaking news whereby the present provincial government of British Columbia, Premier Christ Clark and her opposite number
of the New Democratic Party (NDP) together with all the legislators tendered their heartfelt apologizes to the Chinese pioneers who
came to this province in the 1800s.
This frugal, hardworking and courageous Chinese workers were instrumental in building the Pacific railway line linking both
Western and Eastern part of Canada. Their contributions were indeed so important to the entire country.
Hundreds of these folks died due to sheer physical exhaustion and numerous diseases, especially during the gruelling and cold
winter months slogging impossibly to build the railway line.
They were discriminated and bullied by their fellow white workers and the government which yoked upon them the head tax
which they were compelled to pay prior to landing on British Columbia.
Today, the provincial government, facing pressure from the growing Chinese community, feels that it is about time to due
to political reasons, to tender their "heartfelt" apologies to the Chinese people and promise never again that the government
would discriminate its people, particularly those who have played an important role to contribute their energies in improving
their land.
This would be a good example for those Chinese and descendants of immigrants living in foreign lands including Malay-dominated
Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam (now rioting against the Chinese) for ill-treating the Chinese and continue to discriminate against
them.
When a country or a house is racially and religious divided it will fall ultimately as it would be rotted from within.
Let the shinning example of British Columbia be a guiding light to all those visible minorities who are still subject to discrimination
in foreign lands.
