The Sultan of Brunei - World's Richest Man
***********************************
by Isaac Ho
The Islamic Kingdom of Brunei is virtually the richest one man's estate in South East Asia.
Sir Sultan Bolkiah is the one and only rich Sultan of the Kingdom of Brunei and his subjects are less than a million at the present count.
Situated in two valuable enclaves in Sarawak, his father refused to be part of Malaysia in 1963 so that his kingdom would not have to share the richest source of oil and gas to others.
Before he died, he bequeated his entire kingdom of Brunei to his son, Bolkiah.
The young Sultan of Brunei was educated at the Victoria Institution in Kuala Lumpur, capital of Malaysia.
Brunei was once the kingdom and the colony of Her Majesty Government, Queen Elizabeth II.
Sultan Bolkiah was knighted by the Queen way back in the early 1960.
Each time when England wanted to grant independence to Brunei, the sultan refused because it was too small and too rich and could easily be absorbed by others waiting to take over the two enclaves surrounded by the large piece of Sarawak which is part of East Malaysia.
Finally, in the mid-1970s, England reluctantly let go of the very rich colony of Brunei to be ruled from now onwards by the Sultan, but left behind a battlion of Gurkhas to protect the tiny kingdom.
As can be seen the Sultan owns the entire kingdom and the oil and gas has made him perhaps the richest man in the world.
Is the Sultan of Brunei happy with his immense wealth - his golden palace in which everything within is made of pure gold - is he a happy man?
His Rolls Royce Car is inlaid with solid gold and so is its interior.
He is said to possess many cars, ships and you name it and he has it but the difference is that the articles he uses are inlaid with pure gold.
He has two wives and dozens of children.
I doubt he is happy even with all the wealth surrounding him and he must be constantly worried of the day when he dies and cannot bring in one golden article to his grave.
The Sultan of Brunei, despite his political powers and riches is still a person with all the fears and doubts about life around him.
He has no true or close friends nor absolutely loyal subjects and he knows fully well that his riches will be one day have to leave him when his days on earth is over.
Has he ever think about his God called Allah? And how would he face him one day in eternity when he has to account for the good deeds he has conferred on his fellow man with all the riches that his Allah has given him...not for himself...but to be shared all of them with others within and without his kingdom of Brunei?
As a Muslim, I doubt the Sultan of Brunei knows how to use his wealth generously for the welfare of his people and for the general goodness of mankind outside his kingdom which have nothing and millions are starving and go to bed each night as hungry as before...
So what are all the riches and material wealth in the world, when the Sultan of Brunei, like any human being, must return to his maker and give a detailed account of his actions to his god, Allah!
