LINK UP WITH THE INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION OF THE CHINESE CALLED www.huaren.org .
by Isaac Ho, the Admin
First thing first, dear members of this forum, I am pleased to announce that our forum is now formally linked up with that of www.huaren.org as having similar aim and objective. Do visit the Huaren forum as and when you are free to do so.
The International Huaren (Chinese) Organization was founded way back in 1998 by four patriotic Chinese outside of China.
This was at the height of the massive race riot in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia in which innocent and unarmed Chinese residents were exploited to the hilt, many assaulted, killed or robbed clean of their properties. Some had their shops looted and then burned down. The worst was yet to come when it was learned that some Chinese women folks were subject to sex assault and harassment by rouge members of the Indonesia armed forces.
President Suharto was in power and he was corrupted, fanatical and extreme anti-Chinese in outlook and so was his Silwangi army.
The Indonesian Chinese had a very hard time, living in fear and sometimes their properties (shops) were ransacked by the Indonesian natives with all their sundry goods taken away forcefully.
The law and order in Indonesia during the early 1990s broke down completely.
Chinese Indonesians were forced to adopt Indonesian names, prohibited from celebrating their Luna New Year, lion dances were totally banned and so were firecrackers to herald their New Year. Chinese news papers not allowed by racialistic laws, Chinese schools were forbidden on the pain of facing severe punishment. These were the extend to which the Indonesian Chinese were subject to harshly and without rhyme nor reason, save they were hardworking and frugal Chinese people born in Indonesia and have no links whatsoever with Mainland China!
The Chinese in Indonesia then was subjected to blackmail and if they so much as refused to sell to the army or the Indonesians themselves, they would be branded as anti-Indonesians and severely punished.
When the Chinese applied for passports to leave the country on business, they were exploited by the Indonesians and lots of money was squeezed from them prior to issuing them with the necessary travel documents.
There have been several millions of Chinese in Indonesia and most of them came to settle down and own businesses. In fact, the sugar king of Indonesia was a Chinese tycoon named Ng Tiong Ham.
Like in Malaysia and elsewhere throughout Southeast Asia, the Chinese have business acumen, very competitive businessmen and was said to control the economy of Indonesia. They were looked upon as threat to the native economy.
When the massive race riot started in Jakarta in 1998, U.S. President Clinton despatched his defense secretary named William to Jakarta to access the situation. William also urged the Indonesian President to treat the Chinese well.
Then three Malaysian Chinese plus one Filippino Chinese established this Chinese forum immediately: www.huaren.org .
They looked at the Indonesian situation with alarm and outrage.
And they reproduced world wide news reports to inform members of the far-flung Chinese communities of what happened in Indonesia there among the local Chinese population and the suffering they were experiencing then.
At this stage, I also become a member of the International Huaren Organization and whole-heartedly support its cause to tell the world what was occuring in Indonesia and its Chinese community.
As conditions returned to normal in Indonesia, the four founder members transferred the care and continuation of the Huaren ideals to Dr. Chua Ka Sing, another Malaysian who is currently living in Australia.
Several days ago, I informed Dr. Chua, the Chairman of the Huaren organization that I had started a forum. And he wrote back proposing that my forum ought to link up with his forum - as our aims are similar - apart from other current issues of interest would also disseminate the Chinese culture, history and civilization to the rest of the world.
I trust that our members here will visit the Huaren organization:
www.huaren.org from time to time.
Now that both our forums are formally linked up, I hope members of Huaren Organization would also visit my forum.
Mutually, we shall work for a better world where all peoples can understand and respect one another, fostering peace, tolerants and cooperation.
Thank you all.
