Ukraine mine blast toll tops 100, more killed as violence between pro-Russian rebels and Ukraine army escalates
A mine exploded in eastern Ukraine on Friday night killing at least three Ukrainian soldiers and injuring 12 others, a senior Ukrainian military official said, after Ukrainian forces attacked the pro-Russian rebels' positions near Mariupol.
The official, Major General Andriy Lysenko, confirmed reports of one dead soldier from Ukraine's 11th Mechanized Brigade, who was being treated in hospital in Donetsk, the main city in eastern Ukraine, where fighting has intensified in recent weeks.
More than 3,000 Ukrainian soldiers in Russia's exclave in Crimea have been deployed to fight pro-Russian rebels, with the Russian authorities saying they want the region, part of Ukraine, annexed as quickly as possible.
The official's account came hours after four servicemen - the first Ukrainian servicemen killed in Crimea since the country's annexation by Russia in March of 2014 - were reportedly shot dead at a checkpoint near Simferopol.
Rebels killed at least six pro-Ukrainian residents of Simferopol while they held up Russian-backed Ukrainian forces, local news agencies said. Two other soldiers died in a mortar attack.
Ukraine's top general, Oleksander Turchynov, said in a television interview that "only a few hundred military personnel" had joined the forces deployed to support pro-Ukraine forces near Mariupol.
In the hour that Ukrainian forces had reached the eastern border post of Mariupol, Ukrainian army spokesman Oleksandr Borodai said Ukrainian forces had surrounded the pro-Russia forces at the end of the night.
Rebel fighters fired "a few rounds," Mr Borodai said, but the situation was quiet overnight. He added that the Ukrainian troops believed they had successfully captured the area around the base.
In Mariupol, the town is surrounded by pro-Russia separatists who have taken about 8,000 men as slaves.
Mr Borodai said: "The Ukrainian troops are now defending the city and they are working against the separatist positions."
The city council in Mariupol has ordered a curfew in the city centre, to allow for government forces to enter the building.
Some 5,000 pro-Russian residents of Crimea had gathered in Simferopol at the weekend to celebrate the Crimean referendum against Russia, despite repeated warnings to leave the peninsula.
Russia-backed rebels claimed to have captured the regional administration building in an attempt to block the movement of government forces.
Turchynov said the Donetsk People's Republic had taken control of about three-quarters of the eastern Ukrainian city on Saturday.
